Job Description

The Senior Network Technician will be required to perform and have responsibility for duties including, but not limited to:

  • Design, build, deploy and support complex network solutions.

  • Create, update and review all associated network documentation.

  • Create and maintain network reference architectures that can be used to support solutions development.

  • Provide network SME advice to the customer, and internal and external stakeholders to facilitate project definition, system architecture and process improvement.

  • Create Knowledge Articles on key processes, network devices and systems that can be used across the service desk and wider community of IT support staff.

  • Identify innovative service improvements that provide additional value to network solutions.

  • Provide leadership, training and support to customer and project personnel.

  • Work closely with the Installation, ILS and Engineering teams to plan the integration and deployment of the Defence ICT system onto ship platforms.

  • Work closely with the Defence ICT architecture team to integrate external interfaces onto the Defence ICT system.

  • Work closely with the management team on service risk, obsolescence, resilience and continuity of the Defence ICT system.


Required skills and experience

  • Strong knowledge and experience working as a Senior or Lead Network/Gateway engineer.

  • Demonstrated experience in implementing large scale, geographically dispersed and constrained networks, the associated security threat landscape and related mitigations.

  • Demonstrated experience and SME level knowledge in networking technologies including:

  • Routing

  • Switching

  • IPSec, VPN, VxLAN. OSPF, BGP, MPLS TE

  • Voice Over IP.

  • Next Gen Firewalls

  • Enterprise wireless LAN infrastructure.

  • Network Segmentation

  • Network Access controls

  • Load balancing

  • Network telemetry protocols such as NetFlow, SNMP, etc.

  • Strong knowledge and experience designing Unified communications VOIP/VTC systems.

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in network automation using NSO, Ansible and GitLab.

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in Linux OS, shell scripting and Python.

  • Strong knowledge of Industry standard frameworks (e.g. TOGAF) and ability to apply frameworks to architecture and solution design, including test and evaluation procedures.


Desirable skills and experience

  • Knowledge and experience of Defence ICT systems.

  • Demonstrated experience in the build and set to work of complex IT systems on board Navy ship platforms.

  • Experience working within or interoperating with the Defence Network environment.

  • Ability to rapidly design and architect proof of concept systems to support analysis, testing, accreditation and approval activities, preferably within a DevSecOps process.

  • Demonstrated experience in working together with internal and external engineering organisation to achieve project outcomes

  • Knowledge of Military/Defence oriented frameworks views (e.g. DODAF and NAF).
